Antropologerna Hubert och Mauss beskriver i sitt berömda verk ”Essay on the Nature and Function of Sacrifice” (1898) hur man i Mexiko,

“at the festival of the god Totec, prisoners were killed, flayed, and a priest donned the skin of one of them and became the image of the god. He wore the god’s ornaments and garb, sat on a throne, and received in his place the images of the first fruits.”

Att bli en gudom genom att iklä sig skinnet från en (i rationella termer simpel och ”värdelös”) fånge, kan bara få sin förklaring genom insikten om att det är dödandet, våldet, som är heligt – och som transfigurerar offret till gud. Prästen iklär sig här, bokstavligen, offrets gudomlighet.
